Wrapped up...
So, last week, I was at karaoke talking to my friend Chip about obscure songs from the 80s as I'm often inclined to do and the song "Wrap Her Up" came up.
Not familiar with it? Well, it creeped into the Top 20 on the Billboard charts in 1985 and it was the first recorded duet of Elton John and George Michael. Check out the video...
It's SEETHING with butchness. Nothing like Elton and Georgie talking about wanting to take sassy divas home with them...
And the name dropping duel at the end...listing hot, sexy vixens of the 80s like Billie Jean King, Doris Day, Katherine Hepburn, Joan Collins, Grace Jones, and Vivien Leigh...How could ANYBODY even think these guys were gay back then? Oh wait...
While it's far from being a forgotten gem in the Elton canon (that honor goes to songs that truly should have charted better like "Ego" and "Empty Garden"), it is worth tracking down the full version from the "Ice on Fire" album. The video linked above doesn't even scratch the surface of the "hey, we like girls!" name volleying finale. There's another two minutes of this laced with 80s-dancey-disco-strings! Where else can you hear Shirley Temple mentioned in the same breath as Mata Hari and Natasha Henstridge? Oh, how I was this song was available in karaoke form...
